OUR GHANA ASTHMA CARE PROJECT 2026 DULY LAUNCHED

OUR GHANA ASTHMA CARE PROJECT 2026 DULY LAUNCHED

COMMUNITY AND FAMILY AID FOUNDATION (CAFAF) LAUNCHES GHANA ASTHMA CARE PROJECT IN ACCRA AND ASHANTI REGIONS

ACCRA, GHANA – 12th January, 2026-Monday – The Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF), with the backing of the Global Allergy & Airways Patient Platform (GAAPP), proudly announces the launch of its scaling up "GHANA ASTHMA CARE" project. This six-month initiative, running from January, to July 2026, will focus on community-level education, awareness campaigns, and training to improve asthma and COPD management.

WHY WE CARE

In Ghana, ASTHMA'S impact on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is stark. Since 2020, the country has witnessed 2,772,157 NCD cases, with ASTHMA ranking third, trailing only hypertension and diabetes mellitus, responsible for 239,036 cases.

The numbers grow increasingly alarming with 84,700 new asthma cases in 2021, followed by 79,355 in 2022. More distressing still, from January to June 2023 alone, 36,780 fresh ASTHMA cases have surfaced. For those grappling with asthma, daily medication is a solemn ritual, and these remedies do not come cheap.
The project will kick off simultaneously in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions, with a series of face-to-face events designed for patients, families, and the wider community. These sessions will provide crucial information on recognizing the early signs of an asthma attack and seeking timely medical help.

"We believe that community education is key to dispelling myths and enhancing timely support for those living with asthma and COPD," said JOSEPH SENYO KWASHIE –Global President And CEO of the Community and Family Aid Foundation. "This project will empower patients, families, and our network of local Health professionals, community Volunteers, identifiable groups and networks with the knowledge they need to make a real difference in their communities."

CAFAF is actively seeking partnerships with organizations that share a commitment to public health. We extend an open invitation to schools, associations, churches, youth groups, and all individuals who are eager to gain a deeper understanding of asthma and COPD to join us in bringing these events to every doorstep.

WORLD DIABETES DAY 2025

Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana Joins Global Community to Mark World Diabetes Day 2025, Emphasizing Workplace Health

• Date: November 14, 2025- Friday
• Theme (IDF): Diabetes in the Workplace
• Theme (WHO): Diabetes across life stages, including working age

ACCRA, GHANA – November 14, 2025 –Friday – The Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana (CAFAF GHANA) joins the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the global community in commemorating World Diabetes Day (WDD) today, November 14. Aligned with the global theme for 2025, "Diabetes and Well-being" (with a focus on "Know more and do more for diabetes at work"), CAFAF GHANA is highlighting the critical need to address diabetes in workplaces as cornerstones for national development and industrialization.

CAFAF GHANA sees the 2025 global theme as timely and apt. With millions of people of working age living with diabetes, ensuring their health and well-being at work is paramount to building a brighter future for universal health coverage. In Ghana, as well as globally, the workplace presents an important environment to raise awareness, promote healthy lifestyles, and provide supportive environments for individuals managing diabetes.

The Diabetes Epidemic: Global, African, and Ghanaian Context
Diabetes continues to escalate into a significant global health crisis.
• Globally, approximately 589 million adults aged 20-79 are living with diabetes, and this number is projected to rise to 853 million by 2050 if urgent action is not taken. Alarmingly, over 4 in 10 adults with diabetes are unaware of their condition, increasing the risk of severe complications. In 2024, diabetes was responsible for an estimated 3.4 million deaths globally.
• In the African Region, an estimated 25 million adults are living with diabetes, and 73% of these cases are undiagnosed. This highlights a significant gap in early detection and care, a challenge further compounded by low treatment coverage across low- and middle-income countries.
• In Ghana, the prevalence of diabetes has been a concern, with recent data showing varied trends. While some reports have indicated a decrease in prevalence in previous years, the overall burden of non-communicable diseases remains high, requiring sustained attention.

Why CAFAF GHANA Cares
As a health concern organization, CAFAF GHANA recognizes that unmanaged diabetes significantly impacts productivity, well-being, and national development. People with diabetes often face stigma and discrimination in the workplace, affecting their mental health and confidence. By focusing on the workplace, the Foundation aims to tackle these issues head-on, ensuring that critical human resources can manage their conditions effectively and live healthy, dignified, and fulfilling lives. Inaction in the face of this growing pandemic is not an option.

Our Future Plans: Awareness, Advocacy, and Action
CAFAF GHANA is committed to long-term health awareness and advocacy on diabetes in Ghana. Our future plans include:
• Workplace Screening Programs: Organizing free diabetes screenings in various workplaces across Ghana to promote early detection.
• Educational Workshops: Hosting workshops for employers and employees to raise awareness about diabetes management, prevention, and the creation of supportive work environments.
• Policy Advocacy: Engaging with policymakers to advocate for the integration of diabetes prevention and treatment into national health and primary care plans, ensuring access to affordable medicines like insulin.
• Community Outreach: Continuing our community programs to promote healthy diets, regular physical activity, and normal body weight maintenance to curb the rise of Type 2 diabetes.
Through these efforts, CAFAF GHANA strives to remove barriers to care and empower people to manage their health effectively, ultimately changing the course of diabetes in Ghana and contributing to global health goals.

Throughout this campaign, we will shine a light on the many layers of the eczema journey:
• The emotional toll, including the stress, anxiety, and impact on mental health that many face.
• The physical pain of intense itching, sleep disruption, and painful flares.
• The financial and social burden that strains individuals and families.
• The victories, big and small, in finding effective treatments and daily management strategies.
• The powerful resilience of those who navigate this condition every day.
We call on everyone—patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and policymakers—to get involved. The "Our Skin, Our Journey" campaign is a versatile platform for sharing personal stories, fostering positive narratives, and ensuring that the needs of our community are heard and understood.

This September, we invite you to take action by:

World Youth Day 2025

Capture Here Is A Scene Of SDA College Of Education Demonstrating Role-Plays On STI And AIDS Negotiation Skills

Introduction:
As part of Community and Family Aid Foundation (Ghana) continues observation of World Youth Day 2025 (12th August, 2025) celebrated on the Global Theme “Local Youth Actions for the SDGS and Beyond", Our Focus in Ghana was SDGS Goal 3-Health (Youth and HIV & AIDS in Ghana)

The Workshop

A follow up workshop has been held for some learners of SDA College of Education in Ghana focus on HIV & AIDS Negotiation Skills, on 1st September 2025. Lovedale A. Lovedale Adzo Tsotovor – special assistant, of Community and Family Aid Foundation facilitated the workshop with the students treating special topic on Negotiation Skills and how to prevent HIV to achieve their goals in life.

She highlighted that Day in and day out, we negotiate for fair deal that is best for us. For example, we may negotiate with our parents for our choice of school, choice of subject or course to read, Under peer pressure we negotiate in order not to be stooge, and our in the world of AIDS, we negotiate for safer sex practices that is best for us. One can employ assertive negotiation, aggressive negotiation or passive negotiation skills to achieve a desired goal. After the role play, the students deduced that assertive negotiation stands tall because:
1. You can say no without feeling guilty. 2. Disagree without becoming angry 3. Ask for help when you need it.

Unlike aggressive negotiation that make a person steps on the rights of other in an attempt to defend him/herself. Passive negotiator takes no action to defend him/her right but put other people's interest first. So to stay free of STI and AIDS, assertiveness is key. We shall move to the characteristics of each negotiation skills. We will dwell on how to be assertive to achieve desired goals.

This workshop is a series of continues education and awareness creation among young people and so we at community And Family Aid Foundation –Ghana are happy to Provide students with crucial knowledge and life skills that can influence their health-related choices and behaviors, significantly benefiting them and their communities.

The International Day Of Clean Air For Blue Skies 2025

Theme: “Racing for Air. Every Breath Matters”

Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana Races for Clean Air on International Day of Clean Air for blue skies 2025.

ACCRA, GHANA – September 7, 2025 –Sunday – The Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF) Ghana joins the global community in observing the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies, celebrated today on the theme “Racing for Air. Every Breath Matters”. CAFAF is calling for accelerated solutions and collective action to combat air pollution and improve public health, particularly for vulnerable populations across Ghana.
Air pollution is a significant environmental health risk, contributing to millions of premature deaths globally each year. In Ghana, it poses a direct threat to the health and well-being of communities, disproportionately affecting women, children, and the elderly.

State Of Clean Air In Ghana AS AT 2024

In 2024, air quality in Ghana significantly worsened, leading to the country being ranked among the world's most polluted nations with an average PM2.5 concentration seven times above the WHO annual guideline. Key contributors to this pollution include widespread open waste burning, especially in urban areas like Accra, coupled with vehicle emissions and industrial activities. This deterioration poses serious health risks, with premature deaths from air pollution already estimated at 28,000 annually, a situation that is driving increased public health concerns and calls for stronger policy implementation.

Key Factors in Ghana's Air Pollution:

• Waste Burning: Inadequate waste management systems in cities such as Accra result in the extensive burning of rubbish and e-waste, releasing toxic chemicals into the air.

• Vehicle Emissions: A significant portion of air pollution stems from road transport.

• Household Energy: The use of solid fuels for cooking, such as wood and charcoal, contributes substantially to air pollution within households and the wider environment.

• Industry: Industrial activities also play a role in the country's poor air quality.

Health Impacts:

• Air pollution is considered the biggest environmental public health risk in Ghana.

• PM2.5 exposure is linked to premature deaths.

• Studies indicate a significant reduction in life expectancy for populations exposed to PM2.5.

In line with this year's theme, CAFAF emphasizes that the race for clean air is a race for life. "Every breath we take matters. The health of our children, the strength of our communities, and the sustainability of our environment are directly linked to the quality of the air we breathe," said Joseph Senyo Kwashie of CAFAF- President and CEO Spokesperson, at CAFAF. "We are joining forces with partners, communities, and individuals to drive meaningful change and secure a healthier future for all Ghanaians".

CAFAF Ghana is committed to a multi-faceted approach to address air quality issues by:
• Mass Community Education: Launching awareness campaigns in communities and schools to educate people on the sources and health impacts of air pollution.
• Empowerment of Vulnerable Groups: Focusing on empowering women and young people to adopt clean energy solutions and safe environmental practices in their daily lives.
• Advocacy and Lobbying: Working with existing structures and authorities to advocate for and support the implementation of stricter environmental health policies.
• Promoting Sustainable Practices: Highlighting the importance of effective waste management and reduced reliance on polluting activities.
This observation of the International Day of Clean Air is a call to action for everyone to play their part. The journey to blue skies requires collective investment of time, resources, and effort, from governments and corporations to civil society and individuals. CAFAF is confident that through proactive measures, Ghana can make significant strides toward cleaner air and a more sustainable future.

World Atopic Eczema Day

COMMUNITY AND FAMILY AID FOUNDATION – GHANA JOINS GLOBAL ALLIANCE TO OBSERVE WORLD ATOPIC ECZEMA DAY ALSO KNOWN AS WORLD ATOPIC DERMATITIS DAY 2025

ACCRA, GHANA –– Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Community and Family Aid Foundation – Ghana (CAFAF) is joining the global alliance on Sunday, September 14, 2025, to commemorate World Atopic Eczema Day, also known as World Atopic Dermatitis Day. In partnership with the Global Allergy & Airways Patient Platform (GAAPP) and the global skin community, CAFAF will highlight the journey of those living with atopic eczema under the theme "Our Skin, Our Journey".

Stand with the 230+ millions of us navigating life with this chronic skin condition, celebrating "Our Skin, Our Journey."

While everyone's journey is unique, many common challenges emerge. Studies show that 3 in 4 patients report their treatment expectations are only partially met or not at all. This can be incredibly frustrating when itchy, red, dry, or flaky skin is experienced every 1 to 3 days by over 75% of patients.

Is this also how you feel, or how you’ve felt in the past? Your experience is valid and important. We want to hear YOUR story! How has atopic eczema impacted your life? What changes would make the biggest difference in your daily life? What do you wish others understood?

This powerful initiative, led by the International Alliance of Dermatology Patient Organizations (Global Skin) and the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients' Associations (EFA), aims to amplify the voices of patients and caregivers worldwide. Atopic eczema is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that significantly impacts physical and mental well-being, yet it remains under-recognized in many communities.

"For too long, atopic eczema has been dismissed as 'just a skin condition,' but its effects run much deeper, impacting patients and their families in profound ways," said Joseph Kwashie –President And CEO at CAFAF. "This World Atopic Eczema Day, we are proud to stand with our global partners to bring visibility to this journey. We want to ensure that people living with this disease in Ghana and beyond feel heard, understood, and supported in their daily fight for better care".

In Ghana, studies show that atopic dermatitis is one of the most commonly diagnosed skin conditions among infants, children, and adolescents. Despite its prevalence, patients often face significant challenges, including access to affordable treatment and a lack of public awareness, which can lead to social stigma.

The "Our Skin, Our Journey" campaign is designed to capture the personal stories of patients and caregivers, showcasing their resilience and daily struggles. CAFAF, in collaboration with its partners, will use the day to:

• Raise awareness of the multi-dimensional burden of atopic eczema, including its physical, emotional, and financial impacts.
• Share patient stories using the hashtag #AtopicEczemaJourney to build community and foster a deeper understanding of the condition.
• Advocate for improved access to better care and treatment options for all Ghanaians affected by the disease.

World Patient Safety Day 2025

Global Theme: Safe Care For Every Newborn And Every Child

Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF) Ghana Marks World Patient Safety Day 2025 with Commitment to Maternal and Child Health

ACCRA, GHANA — September 17, 2025 — The Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF) today joins the global community in observing World Patient Safety Day. This year’s theme, as designated by the World Health Organization (WHO), is “Safe Care For Every Newborn And Every Child,” with the powerful slogan, “Patient Safety From The Start!”. CAFAF is proud to highlight its commitment to this theme, recognizing the critical importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of Ghana’s youngest and most vulnerable patients.

The Imperative for Safe Maternal and Child Healthcare in Ghana

The 2025 theme focuses on newborns and children from birth to nine years, acknowledging their unique vulnerability within the healthcare system. In Ghana, despite progress in healthcare access, significant challenges remain, including inadequate infrastructure, workforce shortages, and gaps in infection prevention and control, all of which pose risks to patient safety. A single safety incident can have a lifelong impact on a child's development, and CAFAF believes that Ghana must prioritize safe care to build a healthier future for all.

CAFAF's Mission Aligned with Global Patient Safety Goals

CAFAF’s core mission is to promote the well-being of vulnerable individuals and communities in Ghana, with a strong focus on health, women's empowerment, and youth development. Our work directly addresses the objectives of World Patient Safety Day by:

• Strengthening Community Engagement: We empower families and caregivers with knowledge about patient safety, fostering open communication with healthcare providers and encouraging active participation in their children's care.

• Advocating for Better Standards: CAFAF works to influence policy and mobilize stakeholders to implement sustainable strategies for safer care, especially in reproductive, maternal, and newborn health.

• Empowering the Healthcare Workforce: We support initiatives that promote the training and continuous education of health professionals in patient safety practices, particularly for maternal and pediatric care.

A Sustainable Path Forward for Ghana

Achieving lasting improvements in patient safety requires more than a single day of observance. For Ghana, it requires a long-term, multi-stakeholder commitment to building a resilient and sustainable health system.

Our vision for sustainability includes:

• Investing in Robust Health Infrastructure: Advocating for dedicated resources to improve essential infrastructure, including sanitation and equipment, to reduce risks like hospital-acquired infections.

• Leveraging Technology for Safety: Promoting the adoption of digital health solutions, such as electronic health records, to minimize medical errors and improve information exchange.

• Fostering a Culture of Transparency: Working with healthcare institutions to establish non-punitive reporting systems for adverse events. This will create a culture where staff feels safe to report errors, allowing for continuous learning and improvement.

• Strengthening Partnerships: Collaborating with government agencies, civil society, and international partners to pool resources and expertise, ensuring patient safety is a shared national priority.

Call to Action

On this World Patient Safety Day, CAFAF renews its unwavering commitment to securing a safe and healthy start for every child in Ghana. We urge all stakeholders—policymakers, health workers, parents, and community leaders—to join us in this vital mission. By working together, we can transform the promise of “patient safety from the start!” into a reality for all Ghanaian families.

World Mental Health Day 2025

CAFAF Ghana Joins Global Call to Action on World Mental Health Day 2025: Addressing Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies

ACCRA, Ghana – October 10, 2025 – The Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF) Ghana stands in strong solidarity with the global community in observing World Mental Health Day 2025. We unequivocally endorse this year's theme: "Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies." This theme underscores the urgent need to prioritize mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for individuals and communities grappling with crises, conflicts, and disasters worldwide. Mental healthcare is not merely a secondary concern but a fundamental component of recovery and resilience.
These resources provide details on World Mental Health Day 2025's theme, "Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies":

CAFAF Ghana sounds a renewed alarm to global leaders and all stakeholders to recognize the profound and enduring impact of mental health challenges and to commit to taking these issues with the seriousness they demand. The global mental health crisis is undeniable, and its effects are exacerbated during emergencies, where one in three individuals experiences a mental health condition, and one in twenty faces severe conditions.
Ghana’s Mental Health Situation –Why We Care

The situation in Ghana reflects these global disparities. Over 2.3 million Ghanaians are affected by mental health issues, yet a staggering number lack access to appropriate care. An estimated 13% of Ghanaians suffer from a mental disorder, with only 2% receiving treatment. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), diagnosis and referral are often inadequate, particularly in rural districts, and the country faces a critical shortage of mental health professionals. There is only one mental health staff person for every 13,407 people and a mere 39 psychiatrists (0.13 per 100,000 people) available to serve the estimated 2.3 million needing treatment. Stigma surrounding mental health remains a pervasive barrier, affecting not only those experiencing mental health challenges but also their families and caregivers. Additionally, traditional healers and faith-based practices, while common, sometimes employ harmful methods like chaining or forced fasting. Access to psychotropic medications is often erratic, especially in rural areas, and mental health receives a disproportionately small share of the national health budget, historically less than 1%.

CAFAF Ghana recognizes the formidable challenges and the pressing need for action. Our foundation is committed to making inroads in addressing the mental health needs of the Ghanaian population. To achieve this, we urgently require resources and financial support to implement programs and activities that will bridge the existing gaps in awareness, accessibility, and quality of care.

We plan to undertake several key programs and activities, including but not limited to:

• Community Mental Health Outreach Programs: Conducting widespread awareness campaigns, community durbars, and radio programs to improve mental health literacy and reduce the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health issues.

• Capacity Building for Community Health Workers: Providing comprehensive training and supervision to community health volunteers and primary care providers to enhance their capacity to detect, diagnose, and provide basic mental health support, bridging the gap in professional resources.

• Strengthening Referral Pathways and Collaboration: Working to establish stronger connections between primary healthcare facilities, traditional and faith-based healers, and formal mental health services, ensuring seamless referrals and continuity of care.

• Supporting Livelihoods and Social Inclusion: Implementing initiatives for economic empowerment, including skills development and integration into vocational training programs, to foster self-reliance and reintegrate individuals with mental health conditions into their communities and the workforce.

• Advocacy for Policy Implementation and Resource Allocation: Continuing to advocate for the full implementation of the Mental Health Act and increased government funding for mental health services, including sustainable access to essential psychotropic medications.

We call upon governmental agencies, international organizations, corporate institutions, and individuals to partner with CAFAF Ghana. Your invaluable support, both financial and in-kind, will be instrumental in enabling us to implement these crucial programs and make a tangible difference in the lives of countless Ghanaians grappling with mental health challenges. Together, we can build a more compassionate and resilient Ghana where mental health is valued, protected, and accessible to all, especially in times of crisis.

WORLD HEALTH SUMMIT 2025

COMMUNITY AND FAMILY AID FOUNDATION GHANA URGES WORLD HEALTH SUMMIT 2025 ATTENDEES TO TRANSLATE WORDS INTO ACTION

ACCRA, GHANA – October 14, 2025 – As global leaders, policymakers, and civil society participants gather in Berlin for the World Health Summit (WHS) 2025, the Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana is issuing a powerful call to action. The Foundation is urging all attendees to collectively ensure that the critical decisions and communiqués of the summit are transformed into tangible actions that positively impact global health, rather than remaining mere topics of discussion and speeches.

The World Health Summit 2025, held under the theme "Taking Responsibility for Health in a Fragmenting World," provides a crucial platform to address the most pressing health challenges facing humanity. While the dialogue is invaluable, the Foundation emphasizes that true responsibility lies in the implementation of the solutions discussed. Without concrete strategies and dedicated follow-through, the progress made in the conference halls of Berlin will not reach the vulnerable communities that need it most.

“We stand in solidarity with the goals of the World Health Summit, but our communities require more than promises,” stated Joseph Senyo Kwashie Founder of the Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana. “The time for lovely speeches is over. We implore every leader, every government, and every organization present to commit to actionable strategies and to allocate the necessary resources to ensure that the health outcomes for all people are improved. The health of a fragmenting world depends on our ability to unite in purpose and act with unwavering resolve.”

The Foundation encourages all participants to use this pivotal moment to build bridges of cooperation and to establish clear, verifiable mechanisms for translating policy into practice, ensuring a healthier and more equitable future for everyone, everywhere.

“This Is A Disease, Not Just A Symptom.”

Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana Marks World Chronic Cough Day 2025 with Commitment to Long-Term Public Health Programs

ACCRA, GHANA – 15th October 2025 – The Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF) Ghana, in partnership with The Global Allergy & Airways Patient Platform (GAAPP) and other international partners, is today celebrating World Chronic Cough Day 2025 under the theme: "This is a disease, not just a symptom". The annual awareness day aims to shed light on chronic cough as a serious and often misunderstood medical condition, affecting millions worldwide.

This year's observance holds a special significance for Ghana, as CAFAF recognizes the timely nature of this day and its relevance to public health within the country. While a persistent cough is frequently dismissed, its profound impact on daily life, from sleep disruption and emotional distress to social withdrawal, makes it a critical public health issue.
In response to this pressing need, CAFAF Ghana is proud to announce its intention to implement a series of long-term programs to address coughing as a public health issue across Ghana. These initiatives will include:

• Public Education and Awareness Campaigns: CAFAF will conduct targeted campaigns to educate the public on the difference between a temporary cough and a chronic cough, highlighting that a persistent cough lasting more than eight weeks is a disease requiring professional medical attention.

• Community Outreach and Screening: The foundation will organize community-level screenings to identify individuals suffering from chronic cough and provide referrals for proper diagnosis and treatment.

• Healthcare Professional Training: CAFAF will collaborate with healthcare institutions to equip doctors and health workers with the necessary knowledge to diagnose and manage chronic cough effectively.

• Advocacy for Patient Support: The organization will advocate for better support systems and research to improve the lives of people living with chronic cough in Ghana.

"The unique day is timely and thus, has a special place in Ghana," said Joseph Senyo Kwashie –President And CEO at the Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana. "For too long, chronic cough has been seen as merely a symptom to be endured. Our new long-term programs aim to change that narrative, ensuring that chronic cough is recognized and treated as the serious public health issue it is. Our partnership with GAAPP is crucial in this effort, allowing us to leverage global expertise to create a meaningful local impact."
CAFAF Ghana and its partners urge all Ghanaians to join the conversation this World Chronic Cough Day to help raise awareness, reduce stigma, and advocate for better care.

World Stroke Day 2025

Ghana sits on a "time bomb": CAFAF and partners demand urgent action on rising stroke cases on World Stroke Day 2025

ACCRA, GHANA — October 29, 2025 — The Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF), the Psoriasis Association of Ghana (PAG), and the Stroke Association of Ghana today join forces to mark World Stroke Day 2025. With the global theme #EveryMinuteCounts, this year's focus is on the urgent need to recognize stroke symptoms and act swiftly to save lives. The event, however, carries a stark warning for Ghana: without immediate, focused investment and policy reform, the country's healthcare system is at risk of being overwhelmed by the escalating burden of stroke.

Global situation and the rise of stroke in Ghana

Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. In Ghana, it ranks among the top three causes of death. Decades of research have shown a significant rise in stroke admissions and mortality, driven by a growing adoption of Western lifestyles and an increasing prevalence of risk factors like hypertension and diabetes.
Studies have also revealed alarmingly low public awareness of stroke risk factors and warning signs in Ghana. This lack of knowledge contributes to significant delays in seeking hospital care, which tragically reduces the chance of survival and recovery. A CAFAF representative called the situation a "time bomb, needing urgent attention before it explodes."

Key policy and treatment gaps

The partners highlighted several critical areas of concern:
• Inadequate investment: Despite the growing burden, stroke care receives insufficient investment in facilities, equipment, and specialized training for healthcare professionals.
• Limited rehabilitation: The majority of stroke survivors fall within the working-age population, creating a significant economic and social burden. However, access to comprehensive rehabilitation services is scarce, hindering recovery and productivity.
• Need for integrated care: The interconnected nature of stroke with other conditions, such as hypertension and psoriatic disease comorbidities, demands a more holistic and integrated approach to healthcare.

Recommendations for government and policymakers

On World Stroke Day, CAFAF and its partners are issuing a call to action for the Ghanaian government and policymakers.

1. Invest in stroke care infrastructure: Allocate resources to establish specialized stroke units in key health facilities across the country, equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment technology.
2. Launch national awareness campaigns: Fund and implement a nationwide public health campaign to educate citizens on stroke symptoms (using the F.A.S.T. principle) and the importance of seeking immediate medical attention.
3. Strengthen rehabilitation services: Increase funding for rehabilitation programs to support survivors in their recovery journey and reduce the long-term economic and social costs of disability.
4. Prioritize preventive healthcare: Enhance community-level programs to manage and treat major risk factors like hypertension and diabetes effectively.

"The time for talking is over; the time for decisive action is now," said a spokesperson for the Stroke Association of Ghana. "We must make strategic, urgent investments in stroke care to prevent a public health crisis that will cripple our communities and economy."

About the partners

• Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF): A non-profit NGO committed to improving the well-being of vulnerable communities across Ghana.

• Psoriasis Association of Ghana (PAG): An NGO dedicated to raising awareness, eliminating stigma, and improving care for those with psoriatic disease.

•Stroke Association of Ghana: An organization working to address the rising burden of stroke in Ghana through advocacy, education, and support.

World Psoriasis Day 2025

Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF) and Psoriasis Association of Ghana (PAG) mark World Psoriasis Day 2025 by addressing comorbidities in Ghana

ACCRA, GHANA — October 29, 2025 — The Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF), in partnership with the Psoriasis Association of Ghana (PAG), will host a series of live events in Accra to commemorate World Psoriasis Day 2025. This year's global theme, "Psoriatic Disease and Comorbidities: Understanding the Domino Effect," highlights that psoriasis is far more than a skin condition and can lead to serious related health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and mental health challenges.

The joint event on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, will bring together patients, families, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to shed light on the systemic nature of psoriatic disease. Discussions will focus on identifying and addressing critical gaps in policy, treatment access, care, and support systems for patients and their families in Ghana.

The situation in Ghana

While Ghana's prevalence of psoriatic disease is lower than in other regions, studies indicate it still impacts tens of thousands of people. Despite this, lack of public awareness often leads to stigma, delayed diagnosis, and significant psychological distress for those affected. Access to specialized dermatological care and newer, effective treatment options remains limited, particularly in rural areas, placing a heavy burden on patients and their families.

"Psoriasis can severely impact a person's quality of life and is often misunderstood by the public," said a spokesperson for CAFAF. "This year's theme is critical for Ghana, as we must move beyond viewing psoriasis as a cosmetic issue. By addressing the comorbidities, we can advocate for more comprehensive and integrated care that treats the whole patient, not just the skin symptoms."

Future plans for integrated care

To address these challenges, CAFAF and PAG are committed to:
• Advocating for policy change: We will work with policymakers to integrate psoriatic disease management into national healthcare policies, focusing on early diagnosis and affordable, holistic treatment.

• Strengthening patient support networks: We will expand our support programs to provide emotional and practical assistance for patients and families, helping them navigate the challenges of living with the condition and its comorbidities.

• Increasing public and healthcare professional education: We will conduct ongoing educational campaigns to increase awareness among the general public and provide training for healthcare workers to improve diagnostic skills and knowledge of the disease.

The World Psoriasis Day event is a crucial step in this journey, amplifying the voice of the Ghanaian psoriasis community on a global stage and fostering a network of support to ensure no patient is left behind.

WORLD EARTH DAY 22ND APRIL, 2020

“We are the earth and the earth is us, thus, when we fail to appreciate this wonderful property bequeathed to us by our legends we shall certainly fail our next generations” says Joseph Senyo Kwashie (Executive Director of CAFAF-GHANA).

COMMUNITY AND FAMILY AID FOUNDATION management joins the International community to celebrate the 2020 world earth day. The theme for this year’s encounter is “environmental and climate literacy”. The first world earth day was celebrated in 1970 with a strategy that have been swept under the carpet but 2020 offers us another opportunity not to fail again in the face of the global launch of ambitious goal of achieving global climate and environmental literacy by Earth Day 2020.

Both in Africa and across the globe there is shrinking care for the earth coupled with unpredictable shocks every seconds. These can be attributable to man’s careless approach to environmental and climate literacy issues. Thus, it’s about time we act fast before we throw caution to the wind. Earth Day 2020’s Campaign is Environmental & Climate Literacy

At CAFAF-GHANA we believe that Education is the foundation for progress. We need to build a global citizenry fluent in the concepts of climate change and aware of its unprecedented threat to our planet. We need to empower everyone with the knowledge to inspire action in defense of environmental protection. Environmental and climate literacy is the engine not only for creating green voters and advancing environmental and climate laws and policies but also for accelerating green technologies and jobs.

For this reasons we are happy to send SOS call to WORLD leaders and citizens across the globe to rise to the challenge more than before. We have no other place to call our second home and the earth is our only hope. Policies and action enshrined must work in the face of the full take off of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) Nations have ratified in earnest.

Really the earth is not happy the way we are treating it carelessly while our environmental and climate literacy remains low. No one will do it for us if we do not appreciate the fact that we are the cause of the problem.

This special earth day celebration is quiet appropriate and is a precursor challenging nations and leadership to do more rather than paying mere lip services. Environmental and climate literacy issues are Climate change and 21st century environmental justice are some of the world’s most complex problems. To effectively respond to these challenges, citizens must be appropriately educated and prepared.

For Earth Day 2020, communities must take the lead promoting Environmental and Climate Literacy. Now, more than ever in recent histories, people around the world are hungry to engage in public policy. It is up to all of us to use this unprecedented opportunity to build the change we need.

Finally CAFAF-GHANA takes this opportunity to remind all that our scientific facts are under threat. Lawmakers and business leaders are turning a blind eye to the impending environmental crisis caused by human actions. Environmental justice demands an educated citizenry capable of defending science and reason.

Environmental education is the first step towards progress. The future of technology, the jobs of tomorrow, and the policies and laws that nurture sustainability require all humans to be fluent in local environmental issues and prepared to tackle the unprecedented challenge of climate change. Environmental and climate literacy 360 must be a concern for all, arise and let’s build a positive earth devoid of current looming crisis.

International Overdose Day 2020 Celebration

As a health organization, we are extremely mindful of our roles and responsibilities, that is why our commitment to overdose issues are critical in our calendar of events. This Year’s International Overdose Awareness celebration falls on the 31st august –Monday on the ‘THEME - SUPPORT THE FAMILY IMPROVE THE OUTCOME’, thus our commitment will remain to
· Reduce stigma and discrimination for families and drug users
· Promote family drug support services for families and friends
· Promote harm reduction strategies for families and friends

Says: Joseph Senyo Kwashie –Executive Director at Community And Family Aid Foundation –Ghana

Management of Community And Family Aid Foundation –Ghana and YOUTH RISE (led by Daniel Nii Ankrah in Ghana ) are happy to be associated with this year’s celebration, indeed, drug overdose is an international concern, a 2014 report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimates that about 183,000 people succumb to overdose around the world every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an American public health organization, drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States.

A vast majority of overdose deaths occur due to opioid abuse. Opioids are a class of drugs that reduce the intensity of pain by interacting with proteins called opioids found in the human brain, spinal cord, and other organs. Opiates include illegal substances like heroin, as well as legally prescribed medication such as oxycodone, codeine, and morphine.

The picture in Africa is not different, therefore this calls for the need to rise and arise for change as overdose presents serious consequences. As partners, we believe Overdose is not the only consequence of drug dependence. In many parts of the world, the shared use of needles and drug-injecting equipment can make users vulnerable to hepatitis C and HIV. According to UNODC, an estimated 13% of all drug users globally live with HIV. Drug trafficking and drug-related illnesses and crimes can also negatively affect families and communities.

One of the main purposes of International Overdose Awareness Day is to help reduce the stigma surrounding overdose by talking about it and by bringing attention to the fact that substance abuse and drug overdose is preventable.
We, on this occasion we to sound a clarion call to all ti rise with us to make a Difference in 2020.

International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on 31 August each year and aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or had a permanent injury as a result of drug overdose.
International Overdose Awareness Day spreads the message that overdose death is preventable. Thousands of people die each year from drug overdose. They come from all walks of life.

‘Let’s all be there as the THEME IS SUPPORT THE FAMILY IMPROVE THE OUTCOME’ implies, sincerely renew our commitment to
1. Reduce stigma and discrimination for families and drug users
2. Promote family drug support services for families and friends
3. Promote harm reduction strategies for families and friends

Enough is enough we cannot pretend all is well, every society, family, and above all must live up to our expectation before overdose wipes us all out. Let us be there to support each other, experience sounds, own the processes, and help others to overcome the challenges associated with overdose, and together we will be winning the battle.

We should be proud and know that the action embarked upon by a committed individual has helped to break the silence since its inception, thus, we must keep the fight up to invest, implement country action, finance causes that make education, awareness creation, and sensitization on this subject matter, matter more than before.
Now let’s reflect on the history.

The day was established in 2001 by Australians Sally J. Finn and Peter Streker as a way to commemorate those who have lost their lives to overdose, and to support the loved ones whose lives have been affected by drug abuse.
Since 2012, the responsibility of organizing International Overdose Awareness Day has been taken over by the Penington Institute, an Australian non-profit health organization. Despite its Australian roots, the day is now observed all over the world.

•Strengthening Community Engagement: We empower families and caregivers with knowledge about patient safety, fostering open communication with healthcare providers and encouraging active participation in their children's care.

•Advocating for Better Standards: CAFAF works to influence policy and mobilize stakeholders to implement sustainable strategies for safer care, especially in reproductive, maternal, and newborn health.

•Empowering the Healthcare Workforce: We support initiatives that promote the training and continuous education of health professionals in patient safety practices, particularly for maternal and pediatric care.

A Sustainable Path Forward for Ghana

Achieving lasting improvements in patient safety requires more than a single day of observance. For Ghana, it requires a long-term, multi-stakeholder commitment to building a resilient and sustainable health system.

Our vision for sustainability includes:

•Investing in Robust Health Infrastructure: Advocating for dedicated resources to improve essential infrastructure, including sanitation and equipment, to reduce risks like hospital-acquired infections.

•Leveraging Technology for Safety: Promoting the adoption of digital health solutions, such as electronic health records, to minimize medical errors and improve information exchange.

•Fostering a Culture of Transparency: Working with healthcare institutions to establish non-punitive reporting systems for adverse events. This will create a culture where staff feels safe to report errors, allowing for continuous learning and improvement.

•Strengthening Partnerships: Collaborating with government agencies, civil society, and international partners to pool resources and expertise, ensuring patient safety is a shared national priority.

Global Hand Washing Day 2025

Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana Celebrated Global Handwashing Day 2025 with Children in Samsam-Odumase- Ga West Municipality-Accra

ACCRA, GHANA – October 17, 2025- Friday – The Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana (CAFAF) celebrated Global Handwashing Day with children at the World of Hope International School, Samsam-Odumase, in the Ga West Municipality. The event, happening on Wednesday, October 15, will focus on the power of clean hands to save lives and build a healthier future.

Theme: "Be a Handwashing Hero!"

In line with the Global Handwashing Day 2025 theme, "Be a Handwashing Hero!", CAFAF will educate children on how a simple act of washing hands with soap and water can make them champions of their own health and the health of their communities. This multi-year theme encourages everyone, from children to officials, to lead efforts in championing clean hands for all.

The Importance and Impact of Handwashing

Handwashing with soap is one of the most effective and affordable ways to prevent the spread of diseases. It is a powerful tool against illnesses like diarrhea and respiratory infections, which are major causes of mortality among young children. The simple act of washing hands can significantly reduce the transmission of germs in settings like schools and homes. By celebrating this day, CAFAF aims to foster a lasting culture of hygiene, especially among children who can become powerful agents of change within their families.

Handwashing with soap is one of the most effective and affordable ways to prevent diseases and save lives. It is a cornerstone of public health that significantly reduces the spread of infectious diseases such as diarrhea, pneumonia, and cholera, which remain critical issues in Ghana.

• Reduces Absenteeism: Studies have shown that handwashing education can decrease absenteeism from gastrointestinal illnesses in schoolchildren by 29–57%, promoting better educational outcomes.

• Combats Infections: Proper hand hygiene can cut the rates of diarrheal and respiratory illnesses by a significant percentage, preventing illness and, in turn, saving families from medical expenses.

• Creates a Healthy Environment: Beyond disease prevention, instilling a handwashing habit promotes a cleaner and healthier school and home environment. Children who learn good hygiene become powerful agents of change, influencing their families and communities.

Expected Impacts

The event is designed to create a fun and educational environment that instills good hygiene habits for life. Through proper handwashing demonstrations, interactive art sessions, poem recitations, games, and prizes, CAFAF volunteers will engage the children and make the learning experience memorable. The goal is to:

• Increase knowledge and adoption of proper handwashing techniques.

• Reduce school absenteeism caused by preventable diseases.

• Equip the next generation with a fundamental skill for personal and community health.

Our Call to Action

CAFAF calls on the community, government agencies, and fellow civil society organizations to join the movement for universal hand hygiene. We urge stakeholders to invest in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure to ensure that clean hands are truly within reach for every Ghanaian. Individuals can be handwashing heroes by sharing handwashing messages and reinforcing the practice in their homes, workplaces, and communities. Together, we can create a healthier, more resilient Ghana.

About the Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana
The Community and Family Aid Foundation Ghana (CAFAF) is a non-governmental organization committed to supporting vulnerable children and families through initiatives focused on health, education, and social welfare.

Handwashing situation in Ghana and CAFAF’s response

The Handwashing Situation in Ghana

Despite progress, Ghana continues to face significant hand hygiene challenges, particularly in underserved communities.
• Inadequate Access: According to UNICEF, less than 20% of Ghanaian households with a designated handwashing place have both water and cleansing agents available. Many rural and peri-urban areas lack consistent access to clean, running water, making regular handwashing difficult.
• Awareness-Practice Gap: Studies have shown that while many Ghanaians have a good understanding of the importance of handwashing, this knowledge does not always translate into consistent practice at critical times, such as after using the toilet.

Factors like poverty, access to soap, and distance to water sources can influence behavior.

• School Settings: Research in Ghanaian schools reveals that even with handwashing stands available, a significant portion are not functional due to a lack of running water and soap. This environment poses a risk for the spread of diseases among schoolchildren.

CAFAF's Approach to Address Handwashing Challenges
As part of its commitment to ensuring a clean and healthy environment for everyone, CAFAF is implementing a multi-faceted strategy to address these handwashing challenges:

• Direct Community Engagement: CAFAF goes beyond general awareness campaigns by organizing targeted events like the Global Handwashing Day celebration. The foundation’s volunteers will engage directly with over 500 children at the World of Hope International School, providing practical, hands-on demonstrations of proper handwashing techniques to close the knowledge-practice gap.

• Educational Materials and Training: The foundation will distribute prizes and materials that reinforce hygiene practices, extending the impact of the event beyond a single day. CAFAF also works with teachers and community leaders, training them to act as hygiene champions and sustain educational efforts.

• Infrastructure Support: Recognizing that behavioral change requires an enabling environment, CAFAF will support communities in improving hygiene infrastructure. This can include collaborating with partners to secure water supplies and handwashing stations, ensuring that soap and water are consistently available.

• Child-Centric Focus: By targeting over 500 schoolchildren, CAFAF leverages the power of children as agents of change. Children who adopt proper handwashing habits at school are likely to influence their families, spreading healthy behaviors into the wider community.

• Behavioral Reinforcement: The event's interactive activities, including games and art, are designed to make handwashing a positive and memorable experience. This approach helps to build long-term habits, transforming handwashing from a chore into an established routine.

"We believe that clean hands are a cornerstone of a healthy community," says a CAFAF spokesperson. "By empowering children with the knowledge and tools to practice proper handwashing, we are not just celebrating one day—we are investing in a healthier, more resilient future for Ghana."
